Guanajuato’s automotive cluster drives 20.5% of state GDP as diversification pulls in $4.218 billion in investment

Guanajuato’s state government published a breakdown of the 12 industrial clusters that make up its economy, showing automotive as the leading segment at 20.5% of state GDP while cross-sector investment has reached $4.218 billion since the start of the current administration.

The data, released by the Secretaría de Economía under Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo’s economic development strategy, frames Guanajuato as one of Mexico’s more diversified manufacturing states, spanning sectors from automotive and food to aerospace and medical devices.

Automotive sets the pace

The automotive cluster remains Guanajuato’s largest economic driver, contributing 20.5% of the state’s GDP. In 2025, Guanajuato ranked first nationally in vehicle production and second by production value, according to the Secretaría de Economía, a result the state points to as confirmation of its role as one of Mexico’s principal auto manufacturing hubs.

Food and footwear add scale

The food cluster contributes 15% of state GDP, making Guanajuato the country’s fourth-largest food producer. The Moda cluster — which groups leather and footwear, textiles, and apparel — adds another 7.5% of GDP and keeps the state as the national leader in footwear production, with roughly 75% of the pairs made in Mexico coming from Guanajuato.

Logistics, construction and chemicals round out a broader base

Three additional clusters contribute meaningfully to the state total: Logistics and Mobility at 7.4% of GDP, Construction at 6.4%, and Chemical at 6.1%. The Secretaría de Economía also pointed to growing activity in aerospace, information technology, and medical equipment as higher-value segments where the state is building specialized talent and production capacity, though it did not publish GDP-share figures for those clusters.

$4.218 billion in committed investment

The state’s investment attraction results back the diversification strategy. During the current administration, Guanajuato has closed 61 investment projects worth a combined $4.218 billion and tied to 15,694 committed jobs52.73% of the six-year target set for the administration.

What the Cluster data means for companies evaluating Guanajuato

A state economy built on twelve active clusters rather than one dominant industry gives companies evaluating Guanajuato more than a single point of entry: automotive suppliers, food processors, and footwear makers already operate alongside a growing base of aerospace and medical device manufacturers, each drawing on regional labor and supply chains the others helped build.

For a company weighing where in Mexico to establish or expand, that breadth is itself a data point worth factoring into site selection. American Industries Group has supported manufacturers entering Guanajuato and other Mexican regions for 50 years and can help companies identify the right location, infrastructure, and resources to support their operations.
